A scratch or scuff is often the first thing you notice every time you walk up to your car. Motorcare Body Repair repairs scratched and damaged paintwork for drivers in St Helens — colour-matched, blended and finished so that you would never know it had been touched.

Scratch repairs

  • Light surface scratches in the clear lacquer, often polishable.
  • Deeper scratches that have gone through to the colour, primer or bare metal.
  • Scuffs and scrapes from walls, posts, bollards and other cars.
  • Keyed paintwork and other deliberate damage.

The depth of the scratch decides the repair. A scratch that catches your fingernail has gone through the lacquer and needs proper preparation and refinishing rather than a quick polish.

Paintwork repairs

  • Stone chips on bonnets, bumpers and wings.
  • Peeling or flaking lacquer and faded, chalky paint.
  • Previous poor repairs that have not matched or have started to fail.
  • Panel resprays where the damage covers a larger area.

Colour matching and blending

Your car’s paint code tells us the original colour, but paint changes with age and sunlight. We match the colour to the car as it is now, then blend the new paint into the surrounding panel so that there is no hard edge between old and new. Metallic and pearlescent colours take particular care, which is why this work is done in the workshop rather than on a driveway.

Scratch & Paintwork Repairs: your questions answered

Can a scratch be polished out?

If a scratch is only in the clear lacquer — the kind you cannot feel with a fingernail — it can often be polished out. Anything deeper, into the colour, primer or metal, needs to be properly repaired and repainted.

Will the new paint match the rest of the car?

Yes. We mix paint to your car's colour code and adjust it to allow for fading, then blend the new paint into the surrounding area so there is no visible edge.

How long does a scratch repair take?

It depends on the depth of the scratch and how many panels are affected. Paint needs time to cure properly, so most refinishing work takes at least a day. We will give you a timescale with your estimate.

Do you repair stone chips and peeling lacquer?

Yes. Stone chips, lacquer peel and faded paint on bonnets, roofs and bumpers can all be repaired and refinished.

Is a body shop repair better than a mobile scratch repair?

Mobile repairs suit small, light scuffs. Deeper scratches, larger areas and metallic or pearl colours are much harder to blend outdoors, which is why we repair them in the workshop with proper preparation and controlled conditions.
